Every year, the first Saturday in May is Free Comic Book Day.  Participating stores give out free comics to anybody who comes in.  See the Free Comic Book Day site to find a store near you.

They are doing their yearly Cinco de Mayo celebration/festival on the 2700 block of J street again this year (includes Centro Cocina Mexicana and Harlowes).  If you haven’t been before, it is a huge party (go early to get in, or stand in line for awhile).  Starts at 4pm on May 5 till they shut it down.  There will be live music, a mariachi band and outdoor bars.

Tickets for the event will be $15 pre-sale and $20 at the door, and can be purchased inside Centro Cocina Mexicana at 2730 J Street. And watch your parking because the po-po’s will be out in force this year enforcing parking violations.

Also, Zocolo’s is starting on May 3rd with a Tequila Festival, and celebrating all week.  And don’t forget Hanger 17.  A good spot, a good crowd (not so many people that you get a drink or can’t get in), good drinks and there usually isn’t a cover.

Sacramento filmmaker Deon Taylor is on the verge of a huge breakthrough: a national theatrical release for his horror film, “Chain Letter,” that was filmed here.

There are some interviews, but for the most part it is music, and it’s hard to describe what type of music it is, like you will hear the Ying Yang Twins mixed with The Eurythmics mixed with electronica.

Back when I had HBO, How to Make It in America, the story of two entrepreneurs trying to hustle in New York, was one of my favorite shows. I always wondered who sang the title song.

Come to find out it’s none other than Stones Throw Records’s Aloe Blacc. 

I found out about rapper Aloe Blacc a couple years back when my buddy Corey was doing an interview with another artist and was singing the praise of rapper Blacc, so it was a surprise to find that Blacc was behind the track, which sounds like an old soul track.  Complex magazine has a pretty good interview with Aloe Blacc on how he came up with the song.  Below is the trailer for How to Make it in America.
